A Historic Beachfront Retreat in Wells, Maine

Built in 1900, the three-story Shingle Style Cottage known as “The Sandcastle” has welcomed generations of families to its stunning perch above Wells Beach. Purchased in 1986 by sisters Shirley Eaton and Sandra DiPrizio, this cherished cottage has been in our family for decades. It has played host to countless special occasions, from weddings and birthday celebrations to holiday gatherings and quiet seaside retreats. Loved by both our family and our guests, The Sandcastle is the perfect place to bring loved ones together, offering direct beach access, breathtaking views of the Atlantic, spectacular sunrises, and the charm of a historic seaside home.

About the Space

This grand, historic beachfront cottage retains its original character, featuring details like a slate sink and beautiful stained-glass windows. Perched above Wells Beach, it offers instant beach access and a spacious patio where you can relax and take in the ocean views, especially at high tide.

Perfect for large family gatherings, the house has seven (7) bedrooms and accommodates fourteen (14) guests. At this time, we are unable to accommodate events, however, we welcome small retreats (such as writing or wellness retreats) with prior approval and appropriate insurance. Please reach out to discuss your event needs.

The House

The Sandcastle offers plenty of space to gather, both indoors and out. Enjoy a generously sized living room, a sunroom bathed in natural light, and a charming wrap-around covered porch. The patio is perfect for sipping morning coffee while watching the sunrise or soaking up the afternoon sun.

The fully equpiped kitchen features an oversized fridge, and the large dining table is ideal for family meals or late-night card games.

Sleeping Arrangements

• The Second Floor features three oceanfront bedrooms with breathtaking views, plus two additional bedrooms overlooking Crescent Lane. A shared bathroom is also on this level.

• The Third Floor features two cozy bedrooms tucked under the eaves, offering a bird’s-eye view of the ocean and beach below. Don’t miss the spectacular sunsets from the west-facing third-floor window!

Shared Spaces and Beach Access

• The Patio is a shared space. Each unit has a designated picnic table and has access to a third of the patio. Please be considerate of other occupants. We also provide a limited number of beach chairs for each unit.

• Beach Access is via the Public Way. A stairway at the end of Crescent Lane leads down to the beach and is maintained by the town of Wells.

Linens

• Linens and Towels are provided. Because we have limited on-site laundry we use a linen rental company. The linen bundles, which include sheet sets for all beds, bath towel sets for every occupant and beach towels, are delivered by 5PM on the day of your arrival. These come as a bundle and it is the occupants responsibility to make the beds. Upon check-out, the rental linens must bagged and left on the porch of the house for pick-up.
